An astrological wonder like no other is set to cover the sky over Geneseo! On April 8th, the 2024 Solar Eclipse will go down as a spectacle for the ages, but why not learn some of the science behind it too? We’ve rounded up the top educational events and discussions in the area, all of which happen prior to the big day, from Geneseo alumni and experts.
An Eclipse Overview
Not sure what to expect come April 8th? Faculty from the SUNY Geneseo Physics & Astronomy Department and the SUNY Geneseo Fraser Hall Library have created a collaborative webpage on eclipse education. Eclipse Talk with Dr. Anne Pellerin
March 18th, 2024, 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM, The Wadsworth Library
Dr. Anne Pellerin, astronomer and physics professor from SUNY Geneseo, will be speaking on the upcoming solar eclipse, in a talk accesible to all ages.
Pellerin was previously apart of the James Webb Space Telescope Team , working on a major mission that allowed astronomers to study the early Universe, and the formation and evolution of stars. This insightful discussion will provide context around the wonders of our solar system as we prepare to for the eclipse wonder in the sky!
Daina Bouqin: “Metadata, Meaning, and Erasure in Astronomy.”
April 4th, 2024, 3:30 p.m., at SUNY Geneseo, Newton 202.
SUNY Geneseo alumn Daina Bouquin, will be the Visiting Lecturer of the Geneseo chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at the Geneseo campus 4 days prior to the eclipse. Bouquin is currently the Data Operations and Research Manager for the National Parks Conservation Association, and formerly Head Librarian for Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
In anticipation for the upcoming eclipse, Boquins will discuss the contributions of women astronomers from the 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as its significance in shaping citation practices for contemporary research software in astronomy. These examples demonstrate the impact of deliberate metadata practices, bringing forth hidden narratives and ensuring proper acknowledgment where credit is due.
Eclipse Science for Kids
April 4th 2024, 2:30-3:30 PM, The Wadsworth Library
During the time of this scientific wonder, kids curiosity and exploration is sure to be at peak. Join retired 5th grade teacher Joe DeBell for hands on eclipse science activities at the Library! Registration is free, but required, and open to children in grades 1-5.
